Dr. Ashley Allanson is an English former professional footballer and an academic specialising in sports coaching education and coach development. Born in November 1986, he played as a midfielder in the English Football League, including spells with Hull City and Scunthorpe United, and also represented England at university and futsal levelsduring his playing career.
Following retirement from professional football, Allanson transitioned into coaching and academia, building a research profile focused on how coaches learn, how coaching knowledge is shaped by culture and context, and how player development systems are influenced by social factors. He completed his PhD in Sports Coaching at the University of Hull (2014), with doctoral research examining soccer coach educators in the UK—a foundation that has continued to inform his work in coach education and applied coaching practice.
He is currently an Associate Professor of Instruction in Sports Coaching Education at Ohio University, where his teaching and research focus on the sociological dimensions of coaching, coaching principles, and the structures that underpin effective player development. Alongside his university role, his pathway also includes work connected to East Riding College, reflecting a sustained commitment to coach learning and education across different levels of the system.
Across both practice and academia, Dr. Allanson is recognised for helping coaches think clearly about coaching principles—how to design learning environments, communicate effectively, develop players over time, and build development programmes that are fit for the realities of the game.
