Dr. Vasilios Kalapotharakos

(BSc, MSc, PhD)

Dr. Vasilios Kalapotharakos is a sport scientist and exercise physiologist with a long-standing profile in university teaching and applied football performance. His work centres on the demands of the game—particularly how cardiovascular and neuromuscular adaptations inform conditioning, physical fitness, and training design in soccer.

Academically, he has been a Research Associate and Lecturer at Democritus University of Thrace since September 2007, teaching and researching across health and exerciseexercise physiologyresearch methods, and physical fitness in soccer. His postgraduate training is also rooted at the same institution, where he completed an MSc (1997–1999) and PhD (1999–2003) in Exercise Physiology / Exercise & Health. He has additionally been linked academically to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, further reinforcing his academic foundation in sport science.

In applied football, Dr. Kalapotharakos has held multiple strength and conditioning and sport science roles across professional clubs. These include periods with Panathinaikos, Panionios (including a later role as Sport Scientist/Exercise Physiologist from June 2018 to July 2020), Asteras Tripolis, Ergotelis, Aris Thessaloniki, and Larisa. His international experience includes work with RAK FC and an affiliation noted with Shenzhen Ruby in China, reflecting exposure to different football cultures and performance demands.

Alongside his academic and club work, he is also a Professor with International Soccer Science and Performance Federation (since March 2020), contributing his expertise to coach and practitioner education in the areas of conditioning, match demands, and evidence-informed training methodology.

Fluent in Greek, English, and Spanish, Dr. Kalapotharakos is known for translating exercise physiology into practical football conditioning—helping coaches understand what the game requires, how players adapt, and how to programme training that supports performance while managing load and fatigue.
