Dr. Patrick Orme is a sports scientist and performance coach whose work focuses on the physical conditioning of soccer players and the physiological recovery processes that underpin performance across training and competition. He completed his PhD in Sports and Exercise at Liverpool John Moores University (2013–2019), with doctoral research titled “An Assessment of Heart Rate as a Tool for the Monitoring of Physiological Status in Soccer Players Following Competitive Match-play,” reflecting a long-term interest in how internal load metrics can support day-to-day decision making in elite football environments. He also holds an MSc in Sports Physiology from Liverpool John Moores University (2012–2013), with research examining “The Effect of Caffeine, Taurine & Carbohydrate Ingestion on Football Performance at Altitude.” His professional certifications include a UEFA A Licence (issued May 2019) and ISAK Level 1 Accreditation (issued January 2019, expired January 2022).
Professionally, Orme is currently Head of Performance at Swansea City Football Club (June 2025–present), having previously served as the club’s Head of Sports Science (November 2023–June 2025). In these senior roles he has been responsible for integrating monitoring, conditioning, and recovery strategies into the wider performance model, supporting coaches with training design, weekly periodisation, and the management of player readiness across congested schedules.
Before Swansea City, he spent over seven years at Bristol City Football Club (July 2016–November 2023), progressing from U23s Sports Scientist (July 2016–May 2019) to Head of Fitness and Conditioning (June 2019–November 2023). In the first-team post he led pitch-based physical preparation and conditioning, monitored training loads and physiological status, and worked closely with the manager and coaching staff to inform daily planning and longer-term periodisation, while also contributing broader sports science support to enhance team and individual outputs.
Earlier in his career, Orme worked with Liverpool Football Club as a 1st Team Sports Scientist and PhD Student(June 2013–June 2016) at Melwood, where he contributed to daily, weekly, and longitudinal monitoring of training and match demands, integrated applied research on recovery following match-play, and supported the physical preparation of youth players transitioning toward first-team football. He began his professional pathway with an Academy Sports Science Internship at Everton Football Club (July 2012–May 2013) at Finch Farm, delivering pitch and gym conditioning as well as recovery sessions across academy age groups, and providing day-to-day sports science support to the U18 squad.
