Josh McClaren (MSc, BSc Hons, HCPC)
Josh McClaren is a UK-based high-performance sport psychologist who specialises in helping players and staff build the psychological habits that underpin consistent, resilient performance in elite football environments. Known for his practical, down-to-earth approach, Josh bridges the gap between sport psychology theory and the realities of weekly training cycles, match preparation, selection pressure, and the standards that shape a winning culture.
Josh’s applied career pathway was forged in women’s football, where he worked with Newcastle United Women. During this time, he developed a strong reputation for integrating psychology into the everyday environment, supporting players and staff with the routines, language, and behaviours that improve clarity, confidence, and decision-making under pressure. That experience became a foundation for his philosophy: mindset is not an add-on, it is built into the way a team trains, communicates, and prepares to compete.
He later continued his work in the professional game with Aston Villa, contributing psychological support within a high-performance club setting. Across his club roles, Josh has focused on key performance themes such as focus control, confidence in high-stakes moments, emotional regulation, resilience through setbacks, and the ability to reset quickly and perform again.
Josh currently works with Blackburn Rovers FC Academy, supporting young players within a development pathway where performance and progression demand both talent and psychological robustness. In the academy environment, he helps players build self-awareness, professionalism, and the mental tools required to handle feedback, competition, and the transitions that come with progressing through the system.
Alongside his applied practice, Josh is a fundamental contributor to ISSPF’s online education in his specialist area, helping coaches understand how to develop players mentally as well as tactically and physically. Through his teaching and content, he translates high-performance psychology into clear, actionable strategies that coaches can embed into sessions and weekly planning, strengthening both individual development and team performance.
